Welcome back to our weekly rundown of what's happening around Fernandina Beach, Amelia Island, and the rest of Nassau County. Here's what caught our eye this week.
Saturday morning brings the downtown Farmers Market back to 7th and Centre, opening around 9 a.m. with local produce, baked goods, and makers — a good excuse to wander historic downtown before the day warms up. If you'd rather head inland, Tuscan Rose Vineyards hosts a Harvest Festival starting at 10 a.m. Saturday, and Mocama Beer Company teams up with Nassau County Animal Services for a pet adoption event the same morning. Over at the Amelia Musical Playhouse, the cast of “Annie” takes the stage Friday and Saturday evenings. You can always find more on our Local Events page.
Downtown parking stayed in the headlines this week. On August 20, the Fernandina Beach City Commission voted 4–1 to terminate the city's paid-parking contract with One Parking at the earliest available date. Commissioner Joyce Tuten cast the lone dissenting vote, saying she wanted more information about the financial and contractual consequences before acting. The decision follows voters' approval of a citizen-initiated ordinance requiring public consent before any future paid-parking program. City staff will now work out the earliest legal termination date and how to address the budget gap it leaves behind. We'll keep an ear out as the details firm up.
Looking just ahead, Amelia Island Dining Month kicks off September 1, with participating restaurants across the island offering special menus all month long — a fun reason to try somewhere new. And the free Sounds on Centre concert series returns to downtown on Friday, September 4, with the 7 Street Band playing an evening set on Centre Street. Both are easy, family-friendly ways to send off the summer.
